Moldova Women’s Team Secures Promotion to Billie Jean King Cup Europe Group II

The Moldova women’s national team successfully completed its campaign at the Billie Jean King Cup 2026 Europe Group III event, held in San Marino on the clay courts of the Centro Tennis Cassa di Risparmio.

The team’s primary objective was achieved: Moldova earned promotion to Europe Group II for next season.

During the group stage, Moldova convincingly won Group B with two victories from two ties. The team first defeated Iceland 3-0 and then recorded another 3-0 victory over Kosovo. These results secured first place in the group and qualification for the Promotion Play-off.

In the decisive promotion match, Moldova faced Malta and claimed a 2-0 victory. That result secured the team’s place in Europe Group II.

In the other Promotion Play-off tie, Armenia defeated Estonia 2-0. As a result, Moldova and Armenia became the two teams promoted to Europe Group II.

Moldova’s squad for the tournament consisted of:

  • Daniela Ciobanu, playing captain

Throughout the tournament, the Moldovan team displayed consistent and confident tennis. The squad came through the group stage undefeated and successfully won the crucial promotion match against Malta.

One of the most significant victories came against Kosovo during the group stage. Kosovo had been considered Moldova’s main rival for top spot in Group B, but the Moldovan players won all three matches of the tie and emphatically confirmed their ambitions.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Moldova and Armenia secured promotion to Europe Group II. The remaining teams continued competing in the classification play-offs. In the play-offs for places 5-6, Luxembourg defeated Montenegro, while Ireland overcame Iceland. In the play-offs for places 7-8, Kosovo defeated San Marino and Azerbaijan defeated Malta.

The Billie Jean King Cup is the premier international team competition in women’s tennis, and Moldova’s performance in San Marino represents an important achievement for Moldovan tennis. Promotion to Europe Group II confirms the team’s progress and opens new opportunities for the national team on the international stage.
