The first of two consecutive World Tennis Tour Juniors J30 Regata Trophy international junior tournaments concluded at the National Tennis Center courts in Chișinău. Held from July 7 to 12, the clay-court event brought two titles to Moldovan tennis: Ramina Hîncu claimed the girls’ singles title, while Natalia Drobco and Eva Iurina triumphed in the girls’ doubles.
The standout performer in the girls’ singles event was Ramina Hîncu. In the final, the Moldovan player defeated Romania’s Veronica Cervac 6-4, 6-4. Ramina produced a confident performance in the championship match to cap off an excellent week on home soil with the title.
The home success continued in the girls’ doubles event. Natalia Drobco and Eva Iurina faced the Romanian-Italian duo Isabella Ceparu / Benedetta Terzoli in the final and secured an impressive 6-2, 6-1 victory.
As a result, Moldovan players captured both women’s titles at the tournament: Ramina Hîncu became the singles champion, while Natalia Drobco and Eva Iurina won the doubles competition.
In the boys’ singles event, Romania’s Eduard Dragomir claimed the title with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory over Bulgaria’s Dobromir Manolov in the final.
The boys’ doubles title went to Luca Daraban of Romania and Yehor Romaniuta of Ukraine. In the championship match, they defeated the Romanian pair Eduard Dragomir / Rareș Saracin 6-2, 7-5.
The first Regata Trophy tournament was also significant from an organizational perspective. For the first time in Moldova, a J30 event was conducted using the new Round Robin to Elimination format introduced by World Tennis for selected J30 and J60 tournaments.
During the opening stage, players competed in round-robin groups before the top performers advanced to the knockout draw. This format allowed juniors to play significantly more matches during the first four days, providing valuable international competitive experience.
“This is the first of two J30 Regata Trophy tournaments. Its main feature is that, for the first time, we organized the event in accordance with the new World Tennis requirements by using a round-robin format during the opening stage. Thanks to this system, the players had the opportunity to play a large number of matches over the first four days. We are especially pleased that Ramina Hîncu won the singles title, while two Moldovan players, Natalia Drobco and Eva Iurina, captured the doubles title,” said Natalia Belibova, Secretary General of the Moldovan Tennis Federation.
The National Tennis Center’s international tennis program continues without interruption. Immediately after the conclusion of the first tournament, the second J30 Regata Trophy got underway and will run from July 13 to 19.
Unlike the first week, the second tournament is being played under the traditional single-elimination format. The main singles draws feature 32 boys and 32 girls, with qualifying draws of the same size, while the doubles events include 16 teams in each draw.
Hosting two consecutive international tournaments gives Moldovan juniors the opportunity to compete at home against players from different countries, earn valuable World Tennis Tour Juniors ranking points, and gain international experience that would normally require lengthy and expensive trips abroad.
The victories of Ramina Hîncu, Natalia Drobco, and Eva Iurina made the opening week of the Regata Trophy especially successful for Moldovan tennis and provided an excellent start to the international junior tennis series in Chișinău.
