The Moldova National Tennis Championships across all age categories concluded on Monday, June 8, at the National Tennis Centre.
The tournament was played under challenging weather conditions, as organizers and participants were forced to repeatedly adjust the schedule throughout the week due to heavy rain. Several matches were interrupted during play, while others had to be postponed until the following day.
Despite the difficult weather and an exceptionally busy tennis calendar, which included the ATP Challenger 100 Moldova Open, the upcoming Davis Cup, and television coverage of the second week of Roland Garros, the National Championships maintained their unique atmosphere. Parents, coaches, and tennis fans regularly filled the stands, supporting the young athletes and creating a truly festive environment.
The finals were played on Sunday and Monday, determining the national champions and medalists in all age categories.
According to Tournament Referee Oleg Ivashko, the event unfolded largely as expected, without any major upsets.
“Virtually all of the strongest players confirmed their status as favorites. Those who were considered the leaders of their respective age groups ultimately finished among the winners and medalists,” said Ivashko.
One of the most pleasant surprises of the Championships was Valeria Efodi, who lives and trains in Germany. This was her first appearance at the Moldovan National Championships, and her debut could hardly have been more successful, as she captured the national title in the Girls’ Under-16 category.
“She is definitely a player to watch. This was her first participation in our national tournaments, and she immediately became Moldova’s champion. Without a doubt, she is a promising athlete who could be of interest both to the national team and to the Federation’s future development programs,” emphasized the tournament referee.
Among the other expected successes were the victories of several leading players in their respective age groups. Nour Andreea, despite being younger, successfully competed in the Under-14 category, while Mark Weinberg and Robert Weinberg confirmed their status among the boys, having been considered among the leading title contenders before the tournament began.
The Moldova National Championships once again served as an important stage in the development of young athletes and provided coaches with an opportunity to assess their players’ current level ahead of a busy international season.
The National Tennis Federation of Moldova congratulates all champions and medalists and extends its gratitude to the athletes, coaches, parents, officials, and organizers for contributing another memorable chapter to the Moldovan tennis season.
